New Homeowner in Richmond

Courtney Valos moves into her new home!

With help from Uncle Sam, Courtney Valos moved this past weekend into her house in the Battery Park neighborhood in North Richmond.

"I love old houses, especially the old arts-and-crafts-style houses," said Valos, a dental assistant.

Valos, 32, is the fifth woman to buy a house through a down-payment-assistance program facilitated through New Visions, New Ventures Inc., a local nonprofit whose mission is to help women find financial security.

2009 KIDS Count Data Book

The 2009 National KIDS Count Data Book produced by the KIDS COUNT Initiative of the Annie E. Casey Foundation, profiles the status of children state-to-state and ranks states on ten key indicators of child well-being.

The report this year ranks Virginia 16 versus 15 last year, "An indication that child well-being in Virginia is relatively strong and holding fairly steady," according to John Morgan, Executive Director at Voices for Virginia's Children.  "There are certainly areas needing further improvement, but all-in-all the picture in Virginia compared to elsewhere remains fairly positive."
