Richmond Times Dispatch Editorial: Poverty: Who Cares?

At a recent meeting of the poverty-reduction task force created by Gov. Tim Kaine, an advocate for homeless veterans suggested that the principal problem facing the poor in Virginia is that their fellow citizens have hearts of stone. "People don't care," the advocate said. "That's the biggest problem we have here in Virginia."

ARRA funding for Infrastructure Projects

Governor Kaine Announces $1 Billion Milestone in ARRA Funding Allocated for Infrastructure Projects

RICHMOND-Governor Timothy M. Kaine today announced that more than $1 billion in American Restoration and Recovery Act funding has been allocated for infrastructure projects in Virginia. The infrastructure projects, and jobs created, would not have been possible without the stimulus money provided by the federal government.

Many Problems Face the Poor, Task Force Told

"The conversation on how to reduce poverty in Virginia expanded across the state yesterday, as the task force commissioned by Gov. Timothy M. Kaine held public meetings at two dozen community college campuses and Richmond's City Hall.

The aim was to listen, and come up with a list of ideas on ways to overcome poverty in the specific localities hosting the meetings.

Statewide, the challenges are formidable."

Virginia CASH Campaign Posts Final Tax Season Highlights

With twenty eight coalitions making up the Virginia CASH Campaign, tax filing season for the 2008 tax year was most successful.  26 coalitions provided free tax preparation and electronic filing services to over 21, 300 individual and families.  In addition, over 1,100 paper returns were filed for an additional tax preparation savings to taxpayers of over $231,000.

  • 21,345 -Federal returns
  • $22,832,064- Total federal refunds
  • $4,269,000- Tax prep savings ($200/return)

Central Virginia Community College hosts Act on Poverty Facilitated by Lynchburg Community Action Group

Lynchburg, Va- From the News & Advance in an article by Christa Desrets-

Virginia is seeking solutions for the eradication of poverty — starting with opinions from Central Virginia and 22 other communities across the state.

Central Virginia Community College on Saturday will host the Act on Poverty conversations from 10 a.m. to noon. The event is free and open to the public, and participants each will have two minutes to pitch their proposals to reduce poverty.

“What we are hoping is to get some ideas and thoughts from a cross-section of people in the Central Virginia area,” said James Mundy, president of the Lynchburg Community Action Group, which will facilitate the event.

Senator Webb Introduces Adult Education and Economic Growth Act of 2009

STEP, Inc. Repairing Homes in Franklin County

In an article written by Janelle Rucker, The Roanoke Times online at roanoke.com highlighted STEP, Inc. in a story about volunteers repairing homes in Franklin County.

GLADE HILL -- Retired farmer Hue Smith sat outside his house Tuesday, watching a dozen teens tear off siding, dig up red dirt and apply a fresh coat of sea-green paint to his mobile home. Next door, another group performed similar work, and farther down Golden View Road, even more teenagers tore off an aging front porch.  About 250 volunteers from around the country went to work across Franklin County last week, performing much-needed home repairs for those who can't afford them.
